With dark brown hair, you’ll need to have some highlights put in first, though this does depend on what effect you are looking for.

Putting aside male or female hair types, mostly because I don’t believe there’s a lot of difference when it comes to coloring.

Basic stuff, if you want to color dark hair, you need to lighten it first, time for loads of bleach or peroxide, whatever.

The more you lighten it, the better the color will take.

Namely, it will be brighter and bolder.
